MSL Rating

The reliability of electronic components is validated using Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) tests because board mounting processes, especially solder reflow (for Surface Mount Devices - SMD), involve a high moisture vapor pressure inside plastic packages and high temperatures - as high as 260ºC for lead free reflow processes.

Knowing the part MSL classification level enables proper packaging, storage, and handling of SMD to prevent potential damage as a result of moisture induced stress during soldering or repair operations.

All of CHiL Semiconductor’s parts are MSL1 rated, providing maximum flexibility for storage and handling of our products. As exemplified in the chart below, a MSL 1 rating allows unlimited floor life without concern for re-baking and moisture sealing.
