DESCRIPTION
The CHL8500 is a high performance N-channel MOSFET gate driver specially designed to drive both the high-side and low side external MOSFETs in a synchronous buck power converter. It is designed to interface with the CHiL digital PWM controllers.
The CHL8500 incorporates a unique patented fast tri-level PWM input allowing for fast disable of driver outputs based on a tri-level PWM signal voltage level without the need for a dedicated disable pin or hold off time. This delivers improved transient performance and VR efficiency; especially in the power saving PSI mode. Propagation and transition times are less than 20ns for each driver into a 3nF load. The low side drive is designed for a 3A sink current.
This driver features a variable adaptive non overlap control providing shoot through protection which prevents both high-side and low-side MOSFETs from conduction at the same time and shorting the core voltage to ground. This advanced non-overlap technique minimizes the body diode conduction time and provides best in class efficiency. The CHL8500 has an over-voltage protection in the event of a high-side MOSFET short before startup.
